Skills USA Club

The Skills USA competition consists of a regional and state level competition. The students compete at the regional level at Delta College in three areas including Brakes, Electrical and the Master or Overall competition. Students arrive at different stations set up in the Automotive Technology Laboratory at Delta and complete various tasks from vehicle diagnosis, component identification, written exams, circuit building, equipment set up, vehicle testing or practical applications related to the area they are competing. The students are timed and record their answers on a test sheet. At the end of the competition, students are treated to lunch as the scores are calculated. The day ends with an awards ceremony. If the student places first, second or in some cases third, they will be eligible to compete at the state level. Dow High has had a student place and compete at the state level every year in the past few years. The state level competition is usually given at the Lansing Community College in Lansing. The set up is very similar to regional only more difficult and is a weekend excursion. Dow High had students place at the state level for the last two years. The students were also awarded metals, tools, scholarships, extra credit and letters of recommendations for their efforts.
