The Band Program is open to any student interested in instrumental music. The Symphonic Band is a selected group of students who are motivated toward perfection in ensemble playing. The Concert Band is open to all students who enjoy modern band literature. Both Symphonic Band and Concert Band form the Marching Band.
The purpose of the Band Program is two-fold: First, to further an individual's music education, and second, to represent the high schools in concerts at regional and state music festivals, at football and basketball games, and to promote school spirit. As an organization, one major fund-raising activity is run each year, the proceeds of which are used to finance exchange trips with other high school bands.
From the ranks of these bands a smaller Jazz Band is formed. The Jazz Band, which is comprised of approximately twenty students, meets on Monday evenings and has been hired city-wide to play for private parties and dinners. The Jazz Band annually awards an outstanding member the Louis Armstrong Jazz Award, while the John Phillip Sousa Award is given to a member of the Symphonic Band.
The Charger Band performs at all home football games, pep assemblies, Marching Showcase and local parades. The marching band also participates in the band showcase.
Every Wednesday evening, the marching band members practice for about three hours. Prior to these weekly sessions, the marching band has a week long, all day camp.
Students must enroll in Symphonic Band or Concert Band, have basic competence on their instrument, possess a positive attitude and realize the amount of hard work and dedication necessary for members of the Marching Band. Band members attend a band camp scheduled one week before the school year begins. Following that, they meet daily with about five to seven additional evening rehearsals in the fall. Known as the "Sound of Charger Spirit," the Marching Band provides an essential, spirited part of the atmosphere of Dow High School.
